It’s World Cup time, and you know what that means - superfans, car flipping and game time snacks! Sure you can do chips, wings, crudités and really tiny wieners wrapped in a manufactured croissant product. But why not change it up a bit?
Here’s an easy recipe for crispy fried tofu squares with a simple sesame dipping sauce. (And here’s a video of really sad Brazilian fans.)
For the crispy tofu:
- 1 14 oz package of firm tofu
- ½ cup flour
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 tbsp coarsely ground coriander
- 1 tsp coarsely ground cumin
- 1 tsp chili powder
- ½ tsp pepper
- generous pinch kosher salt
- vegetable oil
For the sauce:
- ¼ cup ketchup
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- ¼ tsp sesame oil
- generous pinch toasted sesame seeds
Begin by cutting the tofu into 1" cubes and placing them on paper towels to dry. It helps to gently press the top with a layer of paper towels to squeeze some of the excess moisture out.
Place the flour, breadcrumbs and spices on a large plate and mix. Throw the tofu into the mixture and coat thoroughly.
Use enough vegetable oil to coat the bottom of a large pan, and heat on a medium setting. When the oil is hot, carefully shake each tofu piece and place in the pan. Use tongs to flip the pieces until the tofu is a nice golden brown. Drain on a paper towel and sprinkle with salt.
For the dipping sauce, whisk the ketchup, soy sauce and sesame oil in a bowl and top with sesame seeds. Enjoy!
