The Hipster Paradox: Being a hipster is cool. In order to be a hipster you have to discover things that are not cool and make them cool. By that logic, anyone who isn’t a hipster is actually cooler than all the hipsters, because they’re living a life that’s so unbelievably cool that it hasn’t even been discovered by hipsters yet.
Speaking of hipsters, let’s talk about mason jars. Specifically, how to assemble a salad in a mason jar. Why do such a thing? Because A) they’re cheaper than most glass Tupperware, B) they’re portable so you can take them to work or school, C) the vertical shape prevents the salad from getting soggy and D) it’s just the cool/uncool thing to do, man.
The instructional diagram above depicts my preferred assembly pattern. I like to soak my “wet” vegetables in the dressing at the bottom, then use my leafy greens as a buffer zone, place my drier vegetables on top of that, and finish off with my toppings of choice. When I’m ready to eat, I shake it, stir it and have at it.
Did I also mention that it’s fun to eat? If you’re trying to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet, this is a great way to do it. It looks so pretty and appetizing layered in a jar that you can’t help but dig in.
My salad consisted of tomatoes, cucumber, spinach, bell pepper, blue cheese and sunflower seeds with a simple balsamic vinaigrette (olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper).
Grilled chicken, grilled shrimp or tofu pieces make good additions if you’re looking to incorporate some protein. You could even grill fruit slices, like apricot or pear, and throw those in. The trick is in the layering when you’re making this salad as a portable snack for later.
Hopefully this inspires you to eat healthy and make a mason jar salad. And maybe mason jars are so cool that they’re now uncool, which makes them cooler than they’ve ever been before. I don’t know. I like the look of VHS right now. Does that make me a hipster? When I see a video that’s intentionally shot with a 4x3 aspect ratio I get excited. Is standard def cool again? These probably aren’t questions worth answering. GO MAKE A SALAD.
