This month I contributed to PAPER/PLATES with a Halloween-themed book review and recipe. The book is one of the creepiest I’ve ever read - Dathan Auerbach’s “Penpal” - and if you’re looking for a novel that will get under your skin, keep you up all night and have you questioning moments from your own childhood, this is it.
You can click HERE for my recipe inspired by the book - Blood Orange Julius. It’s a take on the childhood mall classic, but with an edge. Just like the childhood of the book’s narrator is stained by something sinister, so to is this beverage stained by blood oranges. It tastes the same, but at the same time it’s not quite right. It’s a little unsettling…and delicious.
